Badrinath Ki Dulhania Movie Review
Verdict: A delightful flick that will put a smile on your face.
In 2014, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt teamed up for then debutant Shashank Khaitan’s film, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania which was a sort of a DDLJ for millennials. Three years down, the duo is here again with Badrinath Ki Dulhania, after having played so many diverse roles in their individual careers.
Badrinath Ki Dulhania, produced by Fox Star Studios and Dharma Productions, follows the journey of Badrinath Bansal (Varun Dhawan) and Vaidehi Trivedi (Alia Bhatt) who fall in love despite having opposing views on gender and life in general. While Badri is the kind of individual who does not take no for an answer, Vaidehi is the heroine who exercises her right to choose.
The film begins with a montage of Jhansi, where Badri lives with his family – a feudal father who uses threats of a heart attack to control the family when his orders don’t work, a mother who doesn’t say a word, a brother who had to give up the girl of his dreams only to marry the bride of his father’s choice.
At a wedding in Kota, he meets Vaidehi, a feisty girl who isn’t smitten with the hero at first sight, while he clearly is. It is here that his attempts to woo her begin. Badri has no plans to date Vaidehi he wants to get hitched and gets straight to the point. His idea of a proposal is sending a marriage proposal her way through his broker friend. This does not go too well with Vaidehi since her focus is bagging a job and not a husband. Badri gets insulted and ridiculed but he does not let the rejection get to him.
Badrinath Ki Dulhania may seem like a quintessential Bollywood romance but it is clearly more than just a boy-meets-girl love story. Shashank Khiatan does a brilliant job as a storyteller. While he ticks all the customary boxes that make a love story work, he also does a neat job in dealing with a grim subject such as dowry, without turning didactic. It is commendable how the screenplay, with a helping of humor, still manages to incorporate compelling episodes.
Credit must also be given for the impeccable taste in casting Alia as the strong-willed Vaidehi and Varun as the goofy Badri. It is the chemistry of the duo that keeps you hooked till the end. Alia’s livewire screen presence lights up every frame. Varun not only gets his comic timing spot on, but also manages to make his stalker-like behavior pretty endearing. And when the film calls for sincerity in the emotional scenes, he doles it out impressively.
Why You Should Watch This Movie:
Badrinath Ki Dulhania is everything an easy breezy Bollywood entertainer should be. It has festivity, dance, music and drama. It is perfect for the rom-com fanatic. Try it this weekend!
